Furniture Design Students Need to Let Loose
Where do you go to see the future… Only one piece in this show resists the tyranny of perfection. Floorlamp 1, by Jason Conway, is made of weather-greyed, rough old oak batons, brought together to form a coarse tower of wood about head-high and topped with a heavy cylinder of coarsely cast glass that hides the lamp’s bulb. Sure, the lighthouse look of the piece is contrived… but its overall principles – the subordination of finish to effect, of draughting table to sketchbook – gives it real energy. Floorlamp 1 feels like it was made in the rough-and-tumble of a sculptor’s studio, rather than in the clean spaces of a design lab. And since furniture is some ot the most important, widely disseminated sculpture to be found in our society, it deserves to be given some of the creative urgency of its older, more established high-art cousin.
